The Earth Series of my Elemental Collection of Sea Glass Jewelry features works made from sea glass in shades of browns and greens. Although brown and emerald green are considered common colors of sea glass and are less coveted than some other colors, amber, apple green, lime green, olivine, citron, sage and khaki are all considered to be either rare or extremely rare. The varying shades and the exquisite shapes as well as the smooth and frosted quality of the seaglass in these creations render them exceedingly rare specimens. I love the rich, warm browns and the soft, mellow greens. Wearing these colors helps to ground oneself in reality and/or mother earth. The expression, "to have ones feet firmly planted on the ground," captures the meaning.
The Air Series of my Elemental Collection of Sea Glass Jewelry is made with sea glass in shades of white, gray and lavender. White is considered the most common color of beach glass whereas lavender and gray are considered very rare. I chose these colors to represent the ethereal element that is felt all about us and breathed in and out of us. And yet, for all intents and purposes, we are oblivious to air's presence until it, or the lack of it, is about to cause us harm. Unfortunately, we never seem to appreciate what is freely available which is why white sea glass captures the ubiquitous, unappreciated, essential, and pure quality of the Air Element
Air represent the Breath of Life. Spirit, if you will. The wind-breath which sustains us. White represents the pure, life-giving aspects of this element while gray and lavender represent the portentous, shadow side of this element. Some white pieces of sea glass in my designs have been described as moonstones. I like that; for, indeed, that is what they seem to be. The moon is feminine and reflective light.
I've always loved the purity of white seaglass. The first, and still my favorite, pair of earrings were made from two lovely pieces of white beach glass I found along the shores of Lake Erie up on Presque Isle.
The Fire Series of myElemental Collection of Sea Glass Jewelry is created using the very rarest of all sea glass found along the shores of the worlds oceans, lakes and rivers and includes reds, pinks, oranges and yellows. Finding a piece of poor quality seaglass in one of these colors is exceedingly rare in the experience of beach glass collectors the world over. Finding a perfect, jewelry quality specimen is so rare that you'd be lucky to find one piece in a lifetime of searching. They are the most sought after and the most prized of all sea glass specimens.
The camera tries, but fails, to capture the miraculous inner glow of the highest grade of beach glass that has been on its journey the longest time. This inner fire is symbolic of passion for life and love and work. Finding ones passion, and being willing to follow where that passion leads, is perhaps the hardest, but most satisfying, aspect of the spiritual journey. Wearing these colors is an invitation to listen intently to the deepest calling of one's heart and the highest wisdom of one's soul.
The Water Series of my Elemental Collection of Sea Glass Jewelry is created using an amazing array of blue, aqua, turquoise, teal blue and seafoam beach glass for obvious reasons to lovers of the sea. The colors in this series are considered to be either rare or extremely rare and, unquestionably, represent the most popular colors of sea glass. Wearing seaglass in these colors is like wearing a drop of water frozen in time.
Although water is colorless, it appears to be many shades of blue, aquamarine or even green. People who study these things say that water has an intrinsic color which has a unique origin, the explanation of which is highly technical, and any simple answer is bound to mislead. Put as simply as possible, the color of water is the result of the intrinsic absorption quality of water, the reflected skylight, and the angle at which it is observed. To the best of our knowledge, it is the only example from nature in which color originates from vibrational transitions.
Water is the stuff of life. Without it, life as we know cannot exist. Water is related in the unconscious world of dreams and symbols to emotions and intuition. The cool, smooth feel of these colors of beach glass impart a soothing, calming effect on the body, mind and spirit.
The creation of sea glass has an elemental quality about it: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Glass is composed principally of sand which is fired until it melts, then formed into a vessel which hardens as it cools in the air, or is plunged into water. After a time, someone tosses a used bottle, container or decorative vase into the sea where the glass is tossed about and pounded by the elements until it is broken apart into beautiful, little jewels. These little jewels find their way to shore where some of them are further transformed by the light of the sun. Each little bit of seaglass carries the memory of this journey and seems to glow with its own inner light. This is why finding genuine sea glass is so rare, beautiful and mysterious and why many of us are so truly enchanted with it; and why simulated beach glass cannot hold a candle to the real thing. With a little bit of luck and discerning eyes, a beachcomer may find a truly remarkable, rare and wonderful prize.
